Providing you with the context you need to purchase property abroad
The editorial publication for Americans and Canadians buying property abroad. We aim to provide sources for every claim. We don't take broker ads, referral fees, or provide sponsored coverage.
What we do
We publish cross-border property guides for North Americans to reference when they start researching. We aim to provide clear explanations of the purchasing process, including, fideicomisos, closing-cost math, residency overlays, cross-border tax treatment. We aim to give perspective on cities and markets to help you decide your next big move.
Most cross-border property writing online is written with an agenda in mind, whether it be from a Real Estate Broker or Lawyer, commercial incentives tilt their approach. We built CrossingHQ to be the resource we wanted when looking at purchasing property abroad to try and amalgamate the information on the web on this topic to a single place.
Who did we build this for
Most of our readers fall into three profiles, looking for info on the same destinations but with different angles and goals:
- Pre-retirement planners in their 50s and early 60s, planning ahead 3–10 years for retirement or partial relocation.
- Active retirees in their 60s and 70s on fixed income, deciding within a 3–12 month window — some fully cash, some weighing how to fund.
- Lifestyle migrators in their 30s and 40s, remote workers and entrepreneurs deciding 12–18 months out.
What we cover
Mexico We have the deepest coverage there, including five featured city deep dives (Tulum, Lake Chapala, Mérida, San Miguel de Allende, Puerto Vallarta), three process pillars (fideicomiso, closing costs, wire transfers), and quarterly market reports. The flagship guide is "Buying property in Mexico, the complete American's guide."
For Canadian buyers, the Canadians overlay covers what differs, including: T1135 reporting, CRA rules on foreign rental income, the principal-residence exemption, and Canadian-domestic mortgages versus cross-border financing.
Portugal, Costa Rica, and Panama have hub pages and editorial coverage is rolling out market by market. Belize, Italy, Spain, and the Dominican Republic are queued.

How we work
We aim to provide a source for every claim. Numbers are dated to the month of publication and re-verified on a cadence that tracks how fast the rules move. Our target is updating every 90 days for tax and process content, and 180 days for city pages.
CrossingHQ is informational and not a substitute for professional advice. We can give you an overview of the tax, financial, and legal questions that come up, but individual situations are unique and usually need one-to-one input — engage a qualified specialist in the relevant jurisdiction before you act.
The full sourcing, review, and corrections process is on our methodology page. For the rule changes worth knowing as they happen, subscribe to the Brief.
What we don't do
We don't take referral fees, or affiliate commissions from lawyers, banks, brokers, or developers. We don't do paid placements or sponsored articles dressed as editorial. If we ever take an experimental sponsorship, it will be disclosed in the article header, the byline, and the email — and never inside a buying recommendation. When a writer or reviewer has any financial relationship with a market or firm we're covering, that relationship is named in the piece.
The team
CrossingHQ is written by a small editorial team with cross-border experience. Articles publish under the institutional CrossingHQ Editorial Team byline rather than named individual authors — the editorial standards are the credibility, applied consistently across the team. Full process and review cadence at our methodology page.
